Review: Nic Fanciulli, Joris Voorn, & Loco Dice with TAIMUR+FAHAD at Dekalb Market – 6/8/12
The sun was shining, the temperature was heating up, and the sexy men and women of New York, New Jersey, and of course Brooklyn were pouring into our new favorite Brooklyn outdoor hotspot, Dekalb Market, this past Friday June 8th, 2012 in patient momentum of hearing the effervescent, one-of-a-kind sounds of Nic Fanciulli, Joris Voorn, and Loco Dice, with opening set by the feel-good flow of Taimur+Fahad. Dance.Here.Now. and Pacha NYC have really set up a solid summer of fun for East Coast party-goers with the impeccable setups that they have presented at both Dekalb Market inBrooklyn, NYC and The Beekman Beach Club at Pier 17. A perfect day of soulful, deep-dark-dubby tech and house music was much needed this past Friday and we were left musically and ‘dancefully’ satisfied.
The crowd started to reign through the doors of Dekalb Market around 3:30 p.m.this past Friday afternoon, June 8th, 2012 with plans of a phenomenally filled day of music, food, and friends. Couples were feasting on the good eats provided by the vendors at Dekalb Market and friends were roaming around enjoying the unique provisions offered at the Dekalb container shops. Taimur+Fahad started the afternoon off with some very chill, melodic deep-minimal house. Volume was kept at a minimized level in the early afternoon as we waited for the venue to fill up – which it did rather quickly. As 5:15 came around, from the back of the open air DJ booth we saw the recognizable face of deep tech-house maven Nic Fanciulli peer over the Pioneer Decks. As Nic Fanciulli swooned through the outdoor speaker system of Dekalb Market around5:30 p.m. our ears were laureate with some deep progressive-house tunes that resonated into a deep, dark tech-house that kept our feet moving. Nic Fanciulli cultivated our minds with some of our favorite Fanciulli edits such as his original mix with Joris Voorn “Together”, transitioning a bit darker into Nic’s Radio Slave remix “Grindhouse”. The energy was arising over Dekalb Market as the staff moved the tables out of the main dance area so that fans, locals, and dance-music lovers could fill the venue with good vibes and great dancing. Nic Fanciulli was getting the crowd pumped with his multi-level tech-house melodies including his collaboration tune with Stacey Pullen “Limmo”, collab with Shlomi Aber “Taped & Gorgeous” and Nic Fanciulli’s original fine synthesized symphony of “Movin’ On”. Smiles were found across every dancing face as Nic Fanciulli fastidiously handed the decks over to the undefined, tech/electro/house producing genius Joris Voorn.
Joris Voorn reaches into the deep, artful depths of audio-engineering to develop a sound so confound and mindfully satisfying to his loyal fans. Joris Voorn brings together mutli-level audio linears from minimal-house, to progressive tech mixed with techy-electro-magic. As soon as Joris Voorn came over the decks at Dekalb Market our ears were sent on an impassioned musical journey complete with killer tracks such as Goldfrapp “Believer (Joris Voorn Remix)”, Solomun’s “After Rain Comes Sun” (which was so fitting since it started to rain for a bit during Joris Voorn’s set), and of course our favorite Joris original “Spank the Maid”. My day could have been complete when he played his newest chart topping masterpiece “Goodbye Fly” which sends good vibrations through my veins at every listen, so it was fitfully set for the middle of Joris Voorn’s performance. Shortly after I noticed that this adorable couple dancing in front of me was on the verge of “OMG Freak Out Mode” – understandably why, as we heard the uplifting sound composition of one of Joris Voorn’s biggest tunes to date brush through the Dekalb Market sound system. As Joris Voorn’s flawless remix to DJ Le Roi’s “I Get Deep” came through the Dekalb speakers the volume was maximized and the crowd went WILD, singing along and dancing as if ‘it was the last dance’. Nothing can compare to the unified feeling that comes over a beautiful crowd as they rejoice to a universally loved musical masterpiece. Joris Voorn kept the energy up with vibrant, elevating melodies through the evening, setting a high bar for Loco Dice to hit the decks.
It could not be mistaken when Loco Dice hovered over the Pioneer CDJ setup at Dekalb Market this past Friday, June 8th, 2012 because the sound system was cranked to full volume capacity and Loco Dice hit us HARD with a monstrous rumble of some of the finest tech-house sounds that our ears could take. Early in Loco Dice’s set I caught the techy uproar of “La Bicicletta” which is one of my favorite Latin-flavored house tracks. Loco Dice delivered lots of tweak-y syncs and interchanging levels of tech-house tunes that kept our ears and feet at attention. He would tease us with unparalleled modular builds complete with EFX and projecting techno bars, carrying our audio-senses to powerful drops that brought boundless excitement to the Dekalb crowd. My ears caught immense tunes like Loco Dice’s Beatport chart topper “Loose Hooks”, Paperclip People’s “Parking Garage Politics (Loco Dice Remix)”, and of course, how could he not hit us with the flavorful fan favorite “Beep Beep Beep”. Loco Dice dropped amazing tracks one after another, keeping the crowd at Dekalb Market on their feet and begging for more. It was an amazing day of sun, fun and artistically crafted music this past Friday at Dekalb Market, but all good things had to come to a close shortly after 9 p.m.
Luckily, we live in ‘The City That Never Sleeps’ so an accolade of after-parties were being offered for those that didn’t party-hard enough at Dekalb Market. Loco Dice and Nic Fanciulli motivated their conundrum of deep, dark, drum-infused melodies to Pacha NYC for an after-party that blew the eardrums out of half of midtown west. Joris Voorn took his copious, rarities of sound to play alongside our favorite DJ-couple Sleepy & Boo at Cielo NYC. Dance.Here.Now. and Pacha NYC certainly helped invigorate our musical senses this past weekend in New York City and I know fans look forward to the next outdoor event, and of course the next time we are graced with the fine ‘tune-age’ of Loco Dice, Joris Voorn, and Nic Fanciulli, as well as Taimur+Fahad.
