Review: Deniz Koyu & Tyler Sherritt at Cielo NYC 4-12-2012
German-grown sensation Deniz Koyu graciously serenaded the dance-floor of Meatpacking District’s Cielo Nightclub this past Thursday April 12th, 2012, and just as I presumed, he had party goers moving effortlessly in provocation and appreciation for his original, upbeat melodies. The sounds of Deniz Koyu are said to be inspired by iconic electronic artists such as Daft Punk, Depeche Mode and Kraftwerk, so it’s no surprise that every transition he brought to our ears was more heart pounding than the last while at the same time making us wonder what techy, translucent beats were coming next.
Before Deniz took the decks, rising star to watch Tyler Sherritt warmed up the crowd with upbeat vocals such as Tiesto’s “Beautiful World (ID Remix)“, “Leave The World Behind” and original production “Wonders” which Tyler provided the vocals for himself. Of course what really got the crowd dancing at attention was dropping his hammering version of “What the F!” and Tyler’s collaboration track with First State “Maze“. He had the crowd energized and loosened up in preparation for Deniz Koyu’s arrival to the dj booth, but not before Tyler Sherritt infused our minds with his take on “Hero” and “On The Souk Side (Tyler Sherritt Edit)”, which even had me awe.
Being similar in sound and energy, Tyler’s ability to get the crowd moving nonstop made it a smooth and balanced transition into Deniz Koyu’s opening track which was an ID that has not yet been released. It wasn’t before long that Cielo’s dance floor was pulsating with rhythmic feet and hands in synchronicity waving in the air as Deniz brought to our ears some favorite original tracks like “TUNG!“, “Hertz” and “Hydra“. What stupendously followed in the upcoming morning hours was a heart wrenching musical ‘smorgasbord’ of huge progressive and electronic tracks such as dance floor killer tunes “In My Mind”, “Generation 303” and a MASSIVE remix of one of my, and everyone’s personal favorites at the moment, Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know (dBerrie’s Remix)”. Deniz’s electronic talents brought to us on Cielo’s one-of-kind Funktion-One speakers had appreciative fans and staff members vigorously dancing to every pounding beat. What really set Cielo’s crowd on a heart-palpitating music frenzy was Deniz sneaking in a personal favorite, “Breakin’ A Sweat (Zedd Remix)”.
Deniz Koyu’s performance at Cielo Nightclub left us with no question as to why EDM artist Fedde Le Grand voted him Breakthrough DJ/Producer of 2011 and signed Deniz to his Flamingo Recordings label. Deniz Koyu is star member of the next generation of EDM artists that is shaping the future sound of electronic music. Be sure to keep an ear out for new productions from Deniz Koyu and Tyler Sherritt in 2012.
