Review: Danny Tenaglia Birthday Bash & Vinyl Reunion at Pacha NYC 4.28.12

We were looking for him to go out with a bang for his Birthday Bash/Vinyl Reunion/Resignation party and that is exactly what Danny Tenaglia did this past Saturday at Pacha NYC on April 28, 2012. He brought us on a journey through time hitting different levels of underground house and that quirky hard techno we all love. The crowd was certainly “Being Themselves” arriving in all sorts of vibrant, over-the-top, and some disturbing costume attires but I expected nothing less from Danny’s farewell Vinyl Reunion/Birthday Bash. The atmosphere reminded me of photos and videos that I have seen from legendary nightlife venues The Limelight and Palladium –the bold and the beautiful uniting over old-style techno for 15+ hour party…things were bound to get interesting after 6a.m.

This was Danny Tenaglia’s first visit to New York City in 2012 as announced during a brief pause of the music at Pacha NYC. Somewhere in the midst of the morning hours Danny proceeded to play a ‘phone conversation’ between two “Queens” discussing Danny Tenaglia’s resignation being a hoax – I could have told you that one. The dedicated party-goers have been assured that Danny Tenaglia will continue to play events in the tri-state area, he is solely taking a league of absence from global events, lucky for us we still get to ‘Be Ourselves’ with DT! Let’s hope they weren’t serious about Danny going on tour to open for Avicii. After that amusing public service announcement, we were sent to a land of straight techno complete with plenty of bass-drum, snare and back beats including Danny’s collaboration with D ROYY “Drums Evolution”. He transitioned from semi-mellow melodies to dirty Detroit techno fluctuating between 120-140 bpm. The vibes and atmosphere were great; everyone had high energy and they were having a great time. A positive reinforcement about 15 hour parties is that the population shifts, the venue was never too crowded which gave plenty of room to dance to the brain-teasing sounds of DannyTenaglia.

Toward 11:30a.m., a ‘Danny Runway’ formed in the center of thedancefloor which included the always fabulous and wonderful Vi-Vacious, followed by some of New York’s most supreme underground dancers and of course the occasional effervescently wild costume – did you happen to catch the gentlemen dressed in a pink leopard suit with over-sized women’s curves? Let’s just say the floor got quite colorful during these morning hours, but this is nothing new to those that love Danny’s parties! You can always expect to see something that has never been done before – more surprises emerge as every hour passes. Danny Tenaglia kept us going with his catchy vocals cascaded over minimal-to-adrenaline pumping techno. I even caught him delivering a little bit of old school with amix of Raze “Break for Love” and of course, “Be Yourself”. Overall the night was an incredible journey through sound satisfying our techy-limbs and temporal lobes. I am glad to hear that Danny Tenaglia will continue to appear on the East Coast so we will never run dry of marathon-dance events. Happy Birthday Danny and thanks for once again helping us to ‘Be Ourselves’.
