Preview: Wolfgang Gartner at Webster Hall NYC Friday 4/20/12

When California native Wolfgang Gartner dominates Girls & Boys at Webster Hall this Friday, don’t say we didn’t warn you. Doors open at 10pm for a 19+ crowd who will have their pick of partying in the Grand Ballroom, the Marlin Room and the Studio until Gartner takes the stage in the former. For an idea of what you’re in for, check out the “Space Junk” video. Watching this just got me SO STOKED, I can’t even take it!

What makes Wolfgang Gartner such a distinctive producer are these complex layers that flawlessly come together on every single track. There’s so much going on, it’s a like fucking cacophony of brilliance. Every track feels like a ride, but instead of your typical roller coaster, it’s more like Space Mountain with stars and comets shooting around and sudden moments of whiplash that take you places you never expected. And every single piece of the puzzle is deliberate manipulation according to Gartner:

“Maybe it’s like an insecurity and not being satisfied listening to it over and over, but I’m constantly asking myself ‘Could it be better?’ It could take me three hours to add this little mili-second sound that nobody but me will ever know is there, but I do it. I get into tweaker mode; I’m just sitting there tweaking for ten hours straight on this sound or that track and putting everything together and coming up with something else.”

Take “Illmerica” for instance. After a minute and a half build, he breaks out these ominous synths over a steady high tempo beat which seamlessly flows into these pushes and grinds and halts that will totally knock you out when he throws this shit down live. Not to mention it’s probably one of the cleverest music videos I’ve ever seen. (Pay close attention to some amazing references, history buffs.)
