While everyone applauded Insomniac Events and Pacha NYC for creating a diverse lineup of artists for the EDCNY weekend, great lineups are frequently double-edged swords. With great artists come great artist conflicts when planning out your festival schedule. Switching mid-way between a set can kill your vibe as well as waste precious time, so we have compiled a list of artists that you simply should not go without hearing before the festival ends on Saturday night.

Mark Knight – 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM – Kinetic Field – Friday

Mark Knight has consistently proven his ability to remain at the forefront of both progressive and tech house for the past few years and, quite frankly, without enough praise for doing so. Just recently, Knight brought us a new single, titled “Your Love,” filled with groovy beats and enough soul to keep it on repeat for hours. Across the board, Mark Knight consistently brings dark and driving sets and is one of the biggest acts to look forward to on Friday.

Eric Prydz – 8:30 PM to 10:00 PM - Kinetic Field - Friday

This one goes without saying. After a legendary summer on the Identity Fest tour last year, two epic shows at Roseland Ballroom in New York City this November, the release of the #1 Beatport hit, “Power Drive,” and two brand new releases under Cirez D that came out recently, the past year has been phenomenal for one of the best house DJs in the world. With an impeccable ability to please new and old fans alike, it will be hard to find people at any other stages with Mr. Prydz is DJ-ing at EDC.

ATB – Main Stage – 10:00 PM to 11:00 PM - Kinetic Field – Friday

ATB is one of the world’s best-known trance DJs out there. Despite his lengthy career, his DJ-ing remains spot on as he brings his fans consistent and refreshing trance to both clubs and arenas. Closing out the night with dreamy synths, emotional lyrics, and a lighting spectacle to match, ATB will be the perfect end to your Friday EDCNY experience.

Cosmic Gate – Cosmic Meadow – 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM – Saturday

In case ATB doesn’t quite satisfy your trance-itch on Friday, head back to the Cosmic Meadow on Saturday to catch one of the biggest names in progressive trance at the moment. Riding off the success of their album, Wake Your Mind, and a global tour to match, Cosmic Gate has consistently released successful hits with the likes of Aruna and Andrew Bayer. While the sun will still be up for their set, this duo will cool things off with their dark and driving sound.

Carl Cox – Neon Garden – 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM – Saturday

With nearly every artist scheduled for a short set time, a two hour set truly indicates the legendary nature of a performer. Carl Cox is bringing his friends (including Loco Dice and Art Department) as well as his mega structure for the festivities this weekend. Carl Cox’s sets are mesmerizing, as he samples in and out of tracks with the subtlety that only a true professional DJ can create. The driving percussion and dark beats will keep you dancing and engaged with your mind, body and soul for a good portion of Saturday night. Make sure you swing buy at some point.

This past Friday May 10th, I had the honor of interviewing John Dahlback before his set at Pacha NYC, which coincidentally was the same day as my birthday. The interview took place at around 1 AM in Pacha’s green room, a small comfortable space on the top floor, also known as Pachita. John is a calm, cool, and collected individual, but I had some trouble hearing him, even when I was sitting right next to him. I realized after listening back to the recording that he cracked a couple jokes that I didn’t pick up on. Luckily, my voice recorder had no such problem and picked up his voice well so you could all listen in!

During the interview, we spoke about how Dahlback is able to effortlessly blend genres in his productions, bringing more versatility to the table. With many DJs speaking out recently on the current state of electronic dance music and how the scene in America has become more and more mainstream throughout the past few years. When asking John Dahlback his thoughts on the matter, he told us, “House has almost become one genre now, and everything else is sort of ‘techno’ these days. But when I started, there were 20 sub-genres to house music and 20 sub-genres to techno. It’s just easier now, but I get the feeling that a lot of stuff sounds a bit the same…It’s a little bit sad.”

On so many big names in EDM hailing from Sweden: “It all starts because we have to do musical training in Sweden.”

Getting started as a DJ (on his father’s Atari computer): “I was the biggest noob ever, I was doing hip-hop. I wrote my own lyrics and borrowed a tape recorder from my mom to record the vocals.”

Plans for new music after his most recent single, “Nuke”: “I’ve been looking for a nice label to have a long relationship with.” [Listen for the full story below.]

After the interview, we had a full conversation about DJing versus producing as well as what programs both he and I use. He revealed that he likes to combine FL Studio and Cubase to produce. John then went on to destroy the main floor until 3 AM. He dropped electro banger after banger, and kept the crowd at a peak energy. Just when I thought he was going mainstream by playing Zedd’s “Clarity,” he switched up the drop with his new track “Nuke.” John did this a couple times throughout the night, like with Sebastian Ingrosso & Tommy Trash’s “Reload,” which kept the pace of his set exciting. He played his new staples, “Panic” and “Pressure” as well. However, I couldn’t ID some of the tracks, which could be new music or experimental releases from his label “Mutants.” The closing DJs Grand & Warren kept the crowd going after Dahlback’s set with a huge mash-up between “Mas Que Nada” and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike’s “Wakanda.” On this night, John Dahlback showed why he is a legend in his own right and I’m really excited to see where he goes with this new label. It was definitely a great way to celebrate your birthday!

With the excitement of the 13th annual Detroit Electronic Movement Festival vastly approaching, the extremity of after parties joins in on the fun. This year there is an overwhelming laundry list of amazing after parties – everything from Circo Loco, CLR, Life & Death, to super secret parties (hint hint, Seth Troxler). But one after party that stands out beyond the rest is this year’s Clandestine Artists Showcase taking place at the Tangent Gallery on Sunday, May 26, 2013 hosted by VOLATL Events.

Clandestine represents a variety of coming-of-age electronic artists who are straying from the mainstream and borderline to create their own individual niche in this fast growing industry. Artists like Alan Fitzpatrick, Guy J, Sascha Funk, Tim Xavier, Frank & Tony, and Guido Schneider are just a few of the innovators housed on this eccentric label. When you think of aberrant, new-age house, tech-house, and techno music, Clandestine is one of the names that comes to mind.

The Clandestine Artists showcase in Detroit will showcase not only some of the world’s finest DJ talent, but will be complimented by top-notch audio visual equipment & production. The venue is a historic two room Detroit landmark to provide for an amazing atmosphere, conveniently located close to the festival grounds.

Join Clandestine and the bravest of the after party stay-outs to indulge in some Grade-A dance music entertainment. Purchase tickets now through Resident Advisor before they sell out. As mentioned by Carl in his Global 522 Cloudcast, which was recorded live when he played there on March 6, “It’s without a doubt the best club in New York since Twilo, and I love it!” No surprise to any of us though, as the new Output Nightclub in Williamsburg, Brooklyn hosted many highly acclaimed DJs in the game today, for example Joseph Capriati, John Digweed and Loco Dice.

Output is a club open to everybody, but it’s not particularly for everybody. With the main focus on the music and the people, both Carl Cox and Output share that point of view in common. In a past interview with Dance Music Authority, Carl expressed his feelings on the importance of his audience by saying “ … If I go to a club, and there’s paparazzi on one side and the people on the other. I’ll always go straight to the people. The paparazzi at the end of the day can make you or break you, but the people will always be there — no matter what the media does to you, these people will always be behind you 100%.” It’s with this positive attitude that makes Carl Cox a legend and an overall respected artist in the electronic music world, despite the genre.

This event, in true Carl Cox fashion, will again be on a Wednesday as the official EDC New York Pre-Party where he will be playing an open to close, 6 hour set. Advanced pre-sale tickets are highly recommended. Doors will open at 9 PM for ticket holders, 10 PM to the general public. Tickets are available on Resident Advisor.

Despite the breakup of the DJ super-group, Swedish House Mafia, Steve Angello and his fellow Swedes appear to be continuing their global dance assault in full force. As the darkest producer and spinner of the trio, Steve Angello will make a powerful and dramatic statement at Citi Field during EDC New York this year. Steve Angello released a bold statement on his Facebook this week, criticizing the current state of the EDM scene and how fans affect the music that is produced. Luckily, the silver lining to his statement alludes to Angello’s return to the dynamic sounds that brought him fame.

With that, Steve Angello fans should be even more excited to hear him spin in New York next weekend. Coming off of an impressive Essential Mix and the ten-year anniversary of his record label ‘Size Matters,’ Angello’s commitment to preserving artistic expression through music is setting the bar high for this upcoming weekend. In accordance with his attitude shift, EDM Insider is here to provide some insight into some of Angello’s favorite tracks at the moment.

After his set at Electric Daisy Carnival on Friday, May 17th from 8:35-10:05 at the Circuit Grounds, head over to the official EDC NYC after party at Pacha NYC with Steve Angello. The last time fans were treated to a set from Steve Angello at Pacha NYC was back in September, after his legendary “Size In The Park” show in Central Park. That night, New York club goers were blown away by Steve Angello, playing for over 5 hours on the main floor showing off his darker side with dozens of unidentifiable tracks at the time. Regardless of if he’s dropping mainstream house hits or bringing an underground aura, you won’t want to miss Steve Angello headline at Pacha NYC after Electric Daisy Carnival on May 17th!

Today the announcement was made that Tiesto would be bringing back his popular Club Life mix albums with Volume Three Stockholm, releasing this June through his label, Musical Freedom. Releasing on digital outlets on June 18th and available on disc on June 25th, the mix album encompasses new Tiesto productions and collaborations as well as remixes and originals from major electronic music artists.

The 16 track mix album is inspired by Stockholm, Sweden, which has become one of the most important cities in the world for electronic dance music. Breeding some of the biggest names including Swedish House Mafia, Avicii, Alesso, Dada Life and more, the creative energy from the city has been shaping the way we listen to dance music.

Tiësto explains, “I moved to Stockholm in February 2009 and now spend several months there every year. The Swedes are enormously talented in fashion, music and art, which is extremely inspiring for me when I work on new tracks. There are also lots of great clubs within walking distance from the city center that makes Stockholm a very friendly place to party. This mix album perfectly encapsulates my Stockholm Club Life experience.”

The summer-ready album includes massive Tiesto remixes including his take on Icona Pop’s “I Love It”, “Clarity” by Zedd featuring Foxes, and Passion Pit’s “Carried Away”. Also, the energetic “Champs” by Moguai [Size Records], the progressive house banger “Compromise” by Baggi Bagovic [Musical Freedom] and the dark relentless beats of “Cango” by Pelari grace the track list.

One of the biggest tracks on the mix, and the first single is a brand new Tiesto original featuring Kyler England “Take Me”; a beautiful progressive vocal track that is sure to be an anthem this summer. Listen to the preview below for single available on May 14th. The album and bundles are available to pre-order now, here.
Bounce Boat, New York City’s Premiere Dance Cruise, returned on Friday May 3rd and brought with it a new massive yacht, the Hornblower Infinity. When I say massive, I mean MASSIVE. The Hornblower Infinity is a 210 foot, 1,000 person yacht that would scare off any shark, even Jaws. Recently remodeled with a bold design, this vessel is the largest in the New York fleet. It touts three decks with exterior sun decks and a Skydeck, custom LED lighting, a state-of-the-art sound system, flat screen monitors, four bars, and five dance floors. Departing Pier 40 at around 8 PM, it was definitely the biggest boat I’ve ever been on and a perfect venue for Bounce Boat.

The boat is only one part of this remarkable experience, as Bounce Boat features a full-fledged lineup of premier DJs. This year there were three distinct stages (one for each floor) of progressive house & electro, deep house & techno, as well as trance. The Main stage featured the likes of Tim Mason, Alexander Technique, Aear, as well as performances by the LED robot sensation the Dream Lab. Size Records’ Tim Mason threw it down during the peak of the night with a spectacular mash-up between his signature track “The Moment” and Daft Punk’s “Aerodynamic.” The Dream Lab robot hyped the crowd up and blasted CO2 everywhere at the drops of dance-floor destroyers like Jewelz & Scott Sparks’ “Flashbang.” Mason also played the essential party-starter “Greyhound” by the now defunct Swedish House Mafia, and during the build the Dream Lab robot’s LED outfit flashed and changed colors perfectly to the beat. It was a truly electric experience.

Up top on the Skydeck, Miss Jennifer, Beat Bros, and LaRosa set the groove in the open air among the gorgeous views of the NYC skyline. It was almost surreal with backdrops of the Empire State Building, the Freedom Tower, and the Statue of Liberty throughout the night. There was this magical moment as Miss Jennifer was dropping some sweet, soulful tech house and the LED lights on the Skydeck faded to a soft red illuminating the entire crowd and as I looked to the Manhattan skyline, I realized the Empire State Building was lit up in red as well. The atmosphere on the Skydeck was incredible.

Down below in the Infinity Lounge, Static & Bass, Benjamin Noise, and Sweekuh had intimate, yet party-rocking sets right outside of the VIP section. I ran into renowned nightlife and nude girl photographer Kirill of KirillWasHere fame on this floor. He took a night off from shooting to get, quote his Tweet earlier that evening, “Jewish-girl wasted.” If Kirill was there, then you know it’s a party!

Over the 4 hour voyage, I kept circling the entire boat with Undgrnd Sound’s photographer Raymazing. I spent most of my time on the Skydeck because of the amazing vibes and views. Amid all the dressy guys and gals, there were a good amount of ravers straight out of festival season wearing the official “I <3 Bounce Boat” glasses (I snagged a pair myself) and other neon apparel. Things got weird as I somehow found myself wearing both a bear and a duck mask raging on the Main floor by the end of the night. I was having so much fun, I didn’t want it to end! The Hornblower Infinity returned to port at around Midnight. The official after-party was at Lavo, where Tim Mason was set to rock the mainland just as he did at sea.

Bounce Boat was one of the best nights I’ve had in awhile and definitely the most unique. It’s an experience everyone should get to enjoy at least once! Bounce Boat is the brainchild of two college students from Monmouth County, NJ– Michael Arnone and Max Harrington-Knopf—who share a love for entrepreneurship and, of course, music. They thought of the idea which later evolved into Bounce Boat after a Deadmau5 concert on Halloween in 2010. By 2011, Eric Gatti joined the team to aid in the overall operations of the Bounce Media Group, the umbrella organization for Bounce Boat. The first Bounce Boat in NYC set sail on August 11th, 2011. Over the past 3 years the party as well as the boats have gotten bigger and bouncier, so the only place for Bounce Boat to go is up. Hopefully it will return again soon, as they recently posted a “Summer Tour 2013″ image on their Facebook page! Check out the rest of the wild night’s pictures below!
