Review: ‘Ladies in Paris’ Rebecca & Fiona at Studio Paris Chicago 7/11/12

I don’t normally “hit the club” on a Wednesday night if I want any chance at productivity in the office the next morning, but for these Swedish beauts I made an exception. Last week, Rebecca and Fiona stopped in Chicago during their North American tour to support their new album “I Love You, Man.” I have the utmost respect for this Swede duo. Not only do they mix and produce their own music, but they write and provide the vocal styling as well. It is also worth mentioning how these ladies have made a solid mark in the mainly testosterone filled EDM industry.
There could not have been a better venue for their album release party. I was excited to see a DJ set at Studio Paris given the intimacy of the setting. Not to mention that even though the venue is on the smaller side, this did not mean that one’s personal dance space (which is key) was compromised. The size of the crowd was comparable to a Saturday night out, which is unheard of at most other Chicago clubs on a Wednesday. Lastly, the club’s retractable roof and LED screens spanning the ceilings were not bad touches either.
Studio Paris is typically known as a club for schmoozing and socializing, but that night everyone’s energy was focused on Rebecca and Fiona. Their set included a perfect balance of warm, synth filled tracks and banging hard house beats—all the better to rage to. Watching the girls live behind the decks was a treat because they actually danced instead of the quintessential first pump and/or head nod. Crowd pleasers included their collaboration with Adrian Lux, “Boy,” their hit EP “Bullets,” and of course their collaboration with Kaskade “Turn It Down.”
Before that set Rebecca and Fiona were already favorites of mine, but after seeing them live, I can confidently say that we crossed a threshold in our relationship. I’m talking about that milestone when all you want to shout out is “I love you, man,” and mean it.

As if their stellar performance wasn’t exciting enough, I was able to sit down with Rebecca and Fiona before the show and have an extensive conversation about their lives on the road, the inspiration behind their music, and their thoughts on EDM in general.
