Event Preview: The Language Tour hits Philly with Porter Robinson, The M Machine & Mat Zo
This Sunday, The Language Tour hits Philly, and it’s the only chance for the Northeast to get a slice of the young electro talent coursing its way around the country. Kicking it south straight from Montreal, Porter Robinson and his carefully selected comrades will showcase raw creative talent that far surpasses the typical rave in Philadelphia’s Theater of Living Arts.
First on the roster, the San Francisco based trio, The M Machine, perform a live set along with their signature M, an iPad controlled apparatus that lights up in tandem with the tunes. Their innovative combination of art and technology has earned them praise form Wired and Rolling Stone and intrigued the likes of the blogosphere. With a vision inspired by Fritz Lang’s German expressionist science fiction trail blazer, Metropolis (1927), and a sound that blends an industrial grind with melodic heart, everyone is dying to know more about the machine.
Next is the young Brit, Mat Zo, a 22 year old synth wiz who hesitates to categorize his sound. Recognizing the every blurring lines of genre, his sound is best described in elaborate metaphors of whimsy like this or as a clever hybrid of trance and progressive house with extra elements of je ne sais quoi. This dedication to unique sound paid off, snagging him his first spot on the DJ List in 2010. Here’s his would have been EDC set in case you missed it on our Weekly Roundup.
Finally, we have Porter Robinson, the boy wonder, the child prodigy, the baby slut’s dream. Heading his own tour at 19, Robinson’s career thus far boasts innovative collaboration and touring experience with the likes of Skrillex and Tiësto among others. Inspired by Dance Dance Revolution and having actually played a set at his very first rave, Robinson’s, shall we call it purity, has in a way freed him from expectation and enabled him to tackle electronic music with fresh ears. As these acts simultaneously push the standard envelope, The Language Tour may prove to be one of the most mind-bending line ups of the year. Check out the amazingly nerdy teaser below that features Porter, Mat and the men of the Machine as their very own Street Fighter like characters along with a slightly 8-bitified version of Robinson’s “Language.”
