Groove at the Grove: Electric Zoo Day 2 Sunday School Grove 9/1/12
With all this talk about djs “pushing buttons” and reusing the same playlists festival to festival with the same big name bangers, the Sunday School Grove companions will bring sets unlike your usual ones filled with “pop-tronica” and “big room bangers.” Sunday School Grove Tent has always been a unique alternative to the other packed and sweaty stages at Electric Zoo. Take a moment to read, learn and listen to these talented djs who will take the stage as you prepare to create your schedules for Saturday!
Sleepy & Boo
Sleepy & Boo, the New York centric duo are not strangers to the NYC electronic music scene. Their Basic Saturday party located at the Sullivan room has kept New York funky for the past 8 years. In 2010, they launched their monthly residency at Cielo bringing underground electronic music every second Friday to partygoers. Sleepy & Boo’s prowess as talented and adept djs well qualify them to open the Sunday School Grove on Saturday. Set Time: 11:00am-12:20pm.
Frank & Tony
Self proclaimed for “groovy rhythm and deep house sound”, Frank & Tony declare on the Official Electric Zoo site that they will make you move your body down to the ground. Now who wouldn’t want that? A little bit dub, a little bit soul, and a little bit instrumental; Frank & Tony offer a smooth deep house sound that will warm you up for the djs to come. Set Time: 12:20-1:20.
Tracks to Know: Rings; Worked
Mathias Kaden, a German DJ influenced by 90s house, creates new sound structures for his own productions. Reveling in quality over quantity, Mathias choses to produce and release a minimal number of tracks. This only means when he does, his tracks are here to stay. His sound has been described as funky, dubby, slamming, and freaky. Different sounds of percussion play a dynamic role in his tracks. Start the early afternoon out with some funky sounds. Set Time: 1:20-2:40.
Tracks to Know: Saolee, Lucidas
DJ Koze, a musician of all trades, dabbles in various genres of music. Dj Koze is not only a club DJ, but also involved in the German hip-hop scene. Under different personas, Stefan Kozalla aka DJ Koze, Adolf Noise, and Monaco Schranze experiments with new and exciting sounds. When performing as a house DJ, Koze mixes mostly house and disco tracks with the precision of a hip-hop DJ. His set will be full of interesting melodies and unique sounds, all the more reason to catch DJ Koze between 2:40-4:00pm.

Claude von Stroke
Claude von Stroke was an aspiring filmmaker turned music producer from Detroit. He moved out to San Francisco in 2005 where he started dirtybird records. His label has released over 70 EPs all with dirty house music beats peppered with funk, hip-hop and drum n bass. Claude von Stroke’s first hits “Deep Throat” and “Who’s Afraid of Detroit” are still recognized throughout the house scene. VonStroke’s live sets are always funky and fun. At last year’s Mad Decent Party at the South Street Sea Port von Stroke had thousands of people dancing, I can only imagine how his stage will be at Zoo this year. Set Time: 4:00-5:20.

Maya Jane Coles
Maya Jane Coles knows how to throw down. A female in a testosterone dominated industry, she is not one to second-guess. In 2011, she entered in the Resident Advisor DJ Poll at number 9 as well as winning “Producer of the Year” by DJ Mag. Maya Jane Coles, only 24, is responsible for almost every aspect of her records. Yep! That means she will have written, produced, engineered, arranged, mixed and performed every element of the track. Sometimes she even does the sleeve design! Talk about talented. Moving from a hip-hop to house Dj in her early years as a musician, Maya plays underground house beats spiced with a little bit of dub that will ebb and flow perfectly together for a grand musical experience. Paco Osuna a Spanish dj and producer will continue the night with some full-fledged techno beats. You know you are in good hands when the fine dj standing before you had earned an Ibiza residency at Amnesia. Paco spins minimal beats curated with his own audio palette that is directed by clarity, momentum, agility and intelligence. His song choices create a story to connect with his audience. Resident Advisor hails Sasha as a musician who “plays music that gives emotion the chance to speak.” Wow? Sounds pretty spectacular. When Sasha djs he reads into every unique crowd in front of him and determines how he will tap into their journey. Sasha is categorized as “progressive trance” with house and break beat elements, giving him access to sounds all over the spectrum. Sasha is passionate about music and his love is seen in his dynamic productions and precise dj sets. Sasha has a following of devoted fans around the world. Earlier this summer he graced NYC with djing on a July 4th boat cruise. Go relive the night or become a convert Sasha goes on from 8:00-9:30pm.

Chris Liebing is no stranger to the electronic music scene. He has been involved in the industry for over twenty years now. He has a weekly radio show/podcast that broadcasts to the world. He is one of the forces behind the labels CLR (Create.Learn.Realize) and Spinclub Recordings. Liebing’s sound has evolved over the years, but he always stays true to his techno roots. Liebing has also been one to embrace technology, now using it for real time manipulation. His creativity and innovation shine through on the dance floor creating a dynamic mood.
